National food security strategy 2030 adopted in Belarus
MINSK (BelTA) – Belarus' government has adopted a national food security strategy for the period up to 2030. The relevant decision is stipulated in Resolution No. 962 of the Council of Ministers of 15 December 2017, BelTA learned from the website of the government.
The strategy has been mapped out to implement the government policy in national food security. The policy is aimed at increasing the availability and access to high-quality food products to ensure good nutrition and healthy lifestyle of the population.
The document defines the main criteria for achieving 2030 national food security development goals, namely the sustainable development and better performance of agribusiness. These goals should be reached by means of ensuring an efficient and break-even agriculture (pushing up the sales margin by 11%-13% and increasing the share of agricultural land used for organic production up to 3% in the total area by 2030).
The document outlines an appropriate share of food expenditures to be reached in the structure of personal consumption expenditures: 35% by 2020 and 33% by 2030.
Plans have been made to make the foreign trade in agricultural and food products more efficient.
The strategy will help Belarus enhance its food security to the optimistic level in terms of the most important components. The goal is to increase the physical accessibility by 10% and nutrition quality by 25% by means of improving consumption patterns and boosting the share of healthy and organic foods in the diet.
