Belarus' Constitutional Court marks 30th anniversary

BelTA) – On 28 April Belarus' Constitutional Court marks 30 years since its establishment, BelTA has learned.
The Constitutional Court was set up on 28 April 1994, almost immediately after the adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus. Thus, this day marked the establishment of a new body of judicial power in Belarus.
The Constitutional Court took a meaningful place in the judicial system of the country. It acts as a mechanism to protect the rights and freedoms of citizens. It ensures the rule of law and the unity of the domestic legal system, preserves fundamental constitutional values and the ideas of social harmony and social justice.
The court consists of 12 highly qualified judges. The chair, deputy chair and judges are elected and dismissed by the Belarusian People's Congress. The chair and deputy chair of the Constitutional Court are elected from among the judges of the Constitutional Court. Judges are elected for 11 years.
On 4 April 2024, an international conference timed to the 30th anniversary of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Belarus was held in Minsk. The conference was titled “The supremacy of the Constitution: constitutional changes and the state of constitutional review”. It was attended by delegations of the constitutional courts of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, as well as judges of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Belarus, government officials and leading constitutional scholars.
