Kochanova: Belarus does everything to shield people against coronavirus

MINSK (BelTA) – Belarus is undertaking all necessary measures to stem the spread of the coronavirus, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic Natalya Kochanova said during a phone-in session on 18 March, BelTA has learned.

Natalya Kochanova stressed that “adequate steps are being taken in the country”. “We have no emergency today. We are doing everything necessary to keep people safe,” she said. Screening measures have been strengthened at border checkpoints and Minsk National Airport. The situation in the country is under permanent control. “Continuous monitoring is underway,” she said.

Belarus has not restricted the movement of people and goods, following the recommendations of the World Health Organization. The WHO believes that during a health emergency such measures do not bring desirable results in most cases. “We will not solve the problem by closing borders,” said Natalya Kochanova.

Over three hours the speaker answered 25 calls. The questions were diverse, related to land relations, house major repairs, housing and utilities, etc. The speaker noted that media outlets provide enough information about the spread of COVID-19 in the world and the country. The Healthcare Ministry officials and experts speak to the press literally every day.
